Why did the Jason Lee character put shaving cream IN his hair?

I've always wondered that ever since I saw it when it came out. Anyone know why he put shaving cream in his hair? And if so, why? Does it have the same effect as mousse?

I just saw that scene and I was wondering the same thing. He put it in his beard right?

reply

I think he put it in his hair AND beard!?

My guess would be that it adds control/weighs down his hair without being heavy, sticky, or clumpy like hair products.

As someone who has had long hair many times, as recently as two weeks ago, control without weight or looking dirty is an oasis.

To make it flat and straight- the way any hard rocker would want it in the 70's.

Wow, ok.... that makes sense I guess. Cool, thank you for all that responded!

There was no such thing as gel or mousse back then- guys used shaving cream to control their hair- make it straight, hold it down (without having to use women's hair spray), it also made their hair smell good.

This was in the 70's- guys grooming products were non-existent. Any hint of something that could be feminine was met with the word "GAY!"

Look how hairy everyone was. It was pretty gross actually- guys let their beards creep up their cheeks, their necks, and worse- they had these pork-chop sideburns with all this long, wild hair.

And the pubes grew like wild bushes I bet. EW.

He put it for stylin’ purposes. That he used shaving cream instead of actual mouse / gel / hairspray was the film’s way of communicating his idiosyncrasy.
