Why did he die? Was he also a descendant? Did I miss something major by not understanding this? Did the house kill him, too?

House could have killed him to prevent him from interfering with the fate of the guests.

They were invited by the house because they were descendants but there's nothing to say the house wouldn't randomly kill anybody else who happened to be in there - it was haunted by the ghosts of crazed doctors and disturbed mental patients after all.
