Shampoo question?

Al drinks Imogen’s shampoo to see if he’s immune to it?

What the heck does that mean?

I'm pretty sure that was a joke. The gist was that he'd spent so much time inhaling that scent (whenever they were close) that it wouldn't affect him harmfully if he drank it. Kind of like a vaccine; exposure to the bacteria teaches your body how to react and fight it off.

I agree a bit with ladyred88. But I think it's more symbolic. He spent so much time being upset over her, sad over the break up. He was hoping that if he drank the shampoo (something that distinctly brought back aching memories of her) and it didn't affect him at all...that maybe he could move on and no longer be affected by the break up. That's why when the therapist says "But you weren't immune to the shampoo, you had to have you stomach pumped" and Al goes "I know, that's what worries me". He's basically saying that he fears he is not over her yet.

That says it all right there. I just love the shock on his parents' face "Shampoo?"
