How did Charlie realize the president had MS?

He saw some college form and suddenly realized Bartlet had MS? Doesn't make sense. Now even if, say, Zoey had let him see her college forms for reference to help him out, the president says he left out that he had MS on that form and signed it. So how did he figure it out!? Huge plot hole.

Once the White House Counsel, Oliver Babish, is informed that the information about the President having MS has been concealed, one of his major concerns is determining if the President, his family, or his staff has knowingly falsely stated that the President has no significant health issues. Particularly in a public or verifiable way.

In "Bad Moon Rising" - Season 2, Episode 19, Charlie is seen filling out his own college admission paperwork. While doing so, he realizes that since she was underage at the time of her application, one of Zoey's parents must have filled out, or at least read, the family health statement on the application, then signed the form, attesting to its accuracy. He is unsure, but thinks this might also apply to Ellie's applications. He urgently shares his discovery with Chief of Staff Leo McGarry, who asks him, "How did you know he was sick?" However he does not press Charlie for an answer.

Later in the same episode, President Bartlet meets with Charlie on the White House portico. He has concluded that Zoey told Charlie of the MS. "My youngest daughter's got a big mouth." Charlie denies that Zoey was indiscriminate, but admits that, "She wanted me to be on the lookout for certain physical signs so I could tell the First Lady."

So Charlie found out from Zoey, not from the form. There is still a small plot hole, as Charlie was not known to have the information about the President's MS, so he would not be officially privy to the inquiry as to whether anyone had falsified information. Since he did, in fact know, he could be presumed to have gleaned this information by overhearing confidential discussions.

Oh, that makes sense now, thanks!

Charlie probably did not know that the President had MS, but was told to look out for specific signs and symptoms. The symptoms of MS can be highly variable, but when Jed was telling Toby his symptoms in "17 People," we can imagine that Zoey told Charlie to look out for tiredness, limping and blurred vision, such as eye rubbing.

Also Charlie was Jed's body man. He saw almost everything going on with Jed, There had to be things that he observed that would have allowed him to at least see part of the puzzle. I don't think he knew he had MS, but must have known he was sick. I am sure he saw Jeb have episodes or get injections from Abby.

Surely, as the President's body man, the First Lady may have asked Charleston keep an eye open for symptoms, knowing POTUS wouldn't tell her. Charlie being an intelligent young man may have added one and one, Googled or researched the symptoms and found out.

reply

As the body man, Charlie was called by Congress even though he wasn't in the original 17. Congress wanted him to testify what he had seen, specifically if the President was getting meds from his wife.

I did not like that Bartlett kept it from the public that he had this condition. I know as a voter and a citizen, I have a right to know if someone seeking office has a serious condition.

reply

I don't think that Bartlet really thought about himself as being sick, as MS symptoms can disappear for years at a time.

As far as him being seen getting shots, they could have been Vitamin B12 shots or insulin.

It is doubtful that anyone over the age of 50 would ever be elected if their full medical history is disclosed. Trump never released a full medical report. He does not look healthy, being overweight. His stubby fingers are a sign of serious heart disease. Odds are he won't last out the four years, as he is the oldest person to be elected to the office.

Not being at all facetious when I say he is probably suffering from some mood disorder and may be an ADHD Kid. It would explain military school, where you were sent if your wealthy family could not while you together at Choate or Exeter.

I too doubt he will last tge 4 years. If the law suits and criminal charges mount up, he will plead illness and we will see the 25th amendment in action.

It was a toss-up whether I go in for diamonds or sing in the choir. The choir lost.

I think he suffers from never having owned a pet.

I do wonder why Trump was expelled and wound up in military school, which is the perfect place for a bully.
