Why did the guy cut his face?

If I understand this correctly - the guy in the wheelchair with the disfigured face; got that way because Hannibal gave him a drug that both numbed him of pain and impaired his decision making ability to the extent that he thought it would be a good idea to cut his whole face apart with a piece of glass? What drug makes someone do that?

What was the relevance of him being a child molester? Why was this detail mentioned when it wasn't built upon in the story?

Well i don't drug does that specificly but i guess Dr. Lecter chose the right words to pursued his drugged unstable mind to do that thing to himself.

I agree that part was irrelevant.

The TV series does a better job with this. Hannibal got very far into Mason's head, combined with the drug made him very susceptible.
