Nothing is left to chance or insignificant. So...

What was with the restaurant scene where Aniki gives Denny his steak and laughs his ass off?

Bizarre, yes, funny, yes, but there is a reason for everything...

Any thoughts?

The way I saw it, he told Denny to run, and Denny, with his reply basically said I'll be by your side and Aniki gave him his meal I guess in other words to say here's your reward for stickin by me....I think it may be an honorable thing to share or give up one's meal.

you mean the scene after his "woman" dies? I thought he was joking saying i am going to cry over a whore. denny, does not know what happened to his woman he was not a yakuza. aniki was hiding his true feelings by joking. she ran away was to explain she left cause of what was going on and maybe find someone else. remember he said he dont know where he lives after what happened after the start of war.

ATTENTION! SPOILERS!

We don't know what Aniki might have done had he been left alone to deal with the Mafia.
What we do know, however, is that since Denny would not leave him, Aniki knew that he would do anything to save the boy.
So, in my humble opinion, this particular scene seems like a Last Supper allegory in which the meal's offering represents Aniki's sacrifice that will follow.
