*** SPOILER*** Question about timeline

Every time I watch this film, I get confused about the timeline. Grace is waiting for her husband to come back from WWII, which puts it in the mid-40's. But when they flash to the living people doing the seance (and show their car at the end), it appears from their clothing and the car, etc., that they are from an earlier time period than the 1940's, more like the 1920's or so. How would the living people be able to see ghosts of people who died in the future?

You're trying to think too much into it, it isn't important to the plot. There is not supposed to be anything weird going on with the timeline. They are ghosts from the past haunting the people who moved into the house after them. If it weren't for the war aspect, the time wouldn't matter whatsoever, it is in order, but most likely yes it was supposed to be the 40s.

And I didn't think there was anything showing them to be from the 20s really. The clothes were rather generic, just suits and coats. If you're a 20s expert and it wasn't exact in your opinion that's just nitpicking. And while the car was a little dated, it didn't look to be from the 20s, if anything maybe the 30s. But even if it was, why can't they have a 10 year old car?

The living family looked like they were from the 40's. Not earlier.
My guess is that it did indeed take place in '47.

I think you are mistaken.
The car and the clothing definitely fit into late 40s early 50s style
Automobiles in the 20s would be much more primitive looking than the one shown at the end of the movie
