Dev's sister-in-law

Is there ever any explanation for why she's such a nasty piece of work? Because if there was, I missed it. She just comes across as scheming and one-dimensional, which is a shame. The only explanation I can think of is that her attitude is some kind of jealousy because Dev outshines her husband in the eyes of the family, but I could be totally off the mark with that.

I agree - she's an old-fashioned villain. If she were an American male villain she would be twirling a black mustache and laughing fiendishly in every scene. I think she wants her husband to inherit the bulk of the estate, and I also think, in fairness, he's the "better" (more qualified) son. Devdas has a problematic track record which just gets worse as the film progresses. We know that he butted heads with his father from his early childhood, and that his mother refers to him quite frequently as her "tempest." If I were the brother, having stayed at home respectably, married, taken care of the business end of Mom's estate after Dad's death, etc., I would resent the fact that Devdas has always clearly been the parents' favorite. And if I were the s-i-l, I would be seething about it.

But you're right, she's totally over the top.

And now I'm disappointed at the lack of fiendish laughter....

Thanks for the insight :) It's nice to get other people's opinions on this.

:)

Of course, I haven't read the book. She could have a perfectly reasonable explanation, or she could be a psychotic (which is reasonable in its own way).
