Halley Is Not a Sympathetic Character

Just before the wedding, Halley tells Jonathan she's waited all her life for her dream wedding, that everything was perfect, and she was afraid he'd spoil it by not being as excited about it as she was. She seemed more interested in planning the perfect wedding, not having the perfect marriage. I really didn't feel sorry for her. Anyone else agree?

I'm right there with you. She was so full of herself.

I love this movie! But I think Halley meant his lack of love, not his lack of enthusiasm for the ceremony.

Anyway, though it's one of my favorite romance movies, it still follows the sort of cliche of romance movies that leaving the partner is justified by making the partner unsympathetic. Then the protagonist doesn't confront their lack of love until it's the wedding day or the day before, whether it's their own doing or by circumstance. It makes for better drama.

Also, why are John and Sara so special that the universe favors them over Halley or Lars? Unless, Halley and Lars will end up together or find other love.

Agreed

I don't think we are supposed to like her and it is also why Sarah's fiance is a douche as well. We are meant to be happy they find each other again and not care that they are leaving their fiances behind.

Basically Sarah and John were stupid and selfish and pursued other relationships even though they could have been together from the start.

reply

Neither is Sara cheating on her boyfriend.
