No other movie touched me the way this one did

There are so many things I don't understand about this movie, even the ending was not totally clear (although I do understand that most of the things that happened to Donnie took place only in his mind). Still, watching Donnie Darko was probably the most astonishing movie experience I've ever had.
Never seen anything like it before.

Anyone had a similar experience?

Yes, I've never wasted so much time before. I only watched this movie for the "time traveling" aspect, but even THAT never materialized. Oh, they did a good job at teasing you, about the halfway mark, with that garbage about the old woman having written that book "ABOUT" time travel, but it too, never went anywhere.

I think this movie rates as high as it does, because of the teenage angst and back talk, provided by the high schoolers. If kids acted like that when I was their age, they'd have been locked up... no psychotherapists needed. 

In my opinion it was never intended to be a mere time travel movie, so if that's what you expected, I guess I understand why you were dissatisfied. Also, the "teenage angst and back talk" is not something that would make me give a high rating to any movie. The boy was going through a kind of spiritual/psychological journey that probably not everyone can relate to, or not everyone in the same way. So if you didn't get it, it probably was not meant for you.
Also, it was not only Donnie, but if you realized, everyone in the movie behaved and talked different from what is considered normal. The writer/director had an unconventional perception of people and the world in general, and he was able to convey his point of view in a way that resonates with people who are apt to it.
To put it shortly, this film is probably not for everyone, and I think I understand why one cannot see its values.
As far as I'm concerned, this is an amazing piece of cinema.

I hate movies about teenage angst 90% of the time and love this movie, so explain that one?

This must have been one of those 10%'ers, eh?  I never said the movie was ABOUT teenage angst, now did I?

I'm sure you liked this movie, because of it's subject matter. Did you enjoy the angst and rebelliousness this time?

I merely meant, that those responsible for it's "high" rating, COULD have liked it for it's rebellious nature, not that that's what the movie was about.

Okay. I didn't like it for the teenage angst myself. I'm 36 and haven't felt teenage angst in a long time, Even when I WAS a teenager I hated things about teenagers almost always.

I like it for it's spiritual aspects and because the movie has complex characters.

There were hipsters at one time, but hipsters don't exist anymore as the point of being a hipster is being against trendy things and being a hipster is trendy, therefore it's a paradox. It's impossible to be a hipster now. A few years ago, yes.

Characters are more important than plot.

You need to re-watch, and re-think this movie a few times, because you (understandably) didn't "get it". The movie goes into the realm of quantum theory, multi-verses, parallel universes, and "simulated universe theory". The later is a theory, that has made "news" lately that posits that our "reality" is actually a computer simulation that other beings (for reasons postulated, but probably unknowable). This Theory merited a study by Bank of America (I would love to know the why's of where they fit in), and they believe that the odds are greater than 50%. Other researchers believe that the odds are in the realm of 70%-90%, the well-respected "Scientific America" even has an article on the subject in the April 2016 edition. I know, it sounds totally crazy, but the more you read on it, and consider the "whys", and the people/physicists who are studying the field makes one "pause, and ponder".

During the last few minutes of my first viewing I remember experiencing an amazing weightless and chilling feeling. Very few other movies have had the same powerful effect on me.

My feeling was that God was giving Donnie a "sneak preview" of what would happen if he got out of bed and survived, so that when he died it was his choice, but he would know that in order to save the world, he had to die. It was seeing through "God's channel" that allowed him to make his death a conscious choice. The movie is a dream, a premonition. He wakes up and is enlightened and decides to stay in bed.

I just watched it recently and it is one of the most boring films I've ever seen and yes I got it. Definitely not worth a rewatch.

It was worth it for me ;)
