Wolverines background in the show

I rewatched all the Wolverine based episodes lately and I'm a bit confused about what Logan's backstory in this series is exactly. I mean, the Weapon X bit is obvious but I'm not sure where his relationship with Nick Fury comes in. Was Logan ever a member of SHIELD before joining the X-men? More to the point is the Weapon X program a part of SHIELD in this reality? And is this somehow connected to the Super Soldier Program that created Captain America (as revealed in one of the eps)?

Jusr curious because the other 2 X-men series have gone into great detail to explain at least parts of his backstory but this series didnt go into it much.

Given Wolverines age he could have met Nick Fury in WW2. I actually have a novel featuring Wolverine where he mentions Fury owes him a lot of money from playing poker. May not be a great answer but could be something along those lines.

Yeah thats true in the comics. But I'm talking about the series itself. I seem to recall in one of the eps that Logan mentions he once worked for SHIELD but no longer does so. He and Fury, as well the SHEILD organisation clearly seem to go a long way back.

But in the comics, Logan never really worked for SHIELD, though he has worked for both US and Canadian intelligence at various points of time. In the Ultimate Universe however, the Weapon X program was part of SHIELD which was how he met Fury. Considering that Fury referred to Logan as 'Weapon X' in one ep, it seems to imply that Weapon X was a part of SHIELD in this reality as well or at least that Fury knows something about Logans mysterious past.

Actually , Fury called Logan " Weapon X " TWICE ( First in " X23 " and AGAIN in " Operation Rebirth " ) . The Second Time , he corrected himself saying " Oh yeah , you like to go by Wolverine now , don`t you ? "
