What does an 8 on the shoulder mean?

I think it has something to do with they arent put on the front line so are less likely to die or actually go into battle zones? I am assuming its cus their parents are influential. Am I correct? Posted this on the FAQ ages ago and no reply still

No

It's a shoulder patch. According to it, Lt. Hart is a member of the VIII corps (8th Corps)

I dont know... that doesnt make sense. In the film one of the guys says something along the lines that he wishes he had an 8 on the shoulder and that he should be ashamed of the honour or something like that. I dont properly remember but thats what made think that. It was an awful film btw just curious.

Yes, the blue octagon with an 8 inside is just the shoulder patch of VIII army corps.
An Army Corps, in itself, it's just an headquarters commanding combat divisions.
So, someone with a Corps's patch had a clerical job somewhere in the rear enchelons and few chances to see the front line.
Better educated people (aka, rich) get comfortable and safe headquarters jobs.

The "I wish I had a 8 on my shoulder" means that front line troopers had divisional patches on their shoulders.
