A question please...

What did that "8" patch that Colin Farrell wear symbolize? He also said his dad had one too. I assume it means an officer in some plush job far away from the front lines, but does anyone know??

reply

I think (haven't seen the movie in awhile) it's the insignia of the 8th Signal Battalion, 8th Infantry Division. A white with a yellow arrow through it, on a blue background? Can anyone confirm?

reply

No. It's not the 8th Signal Battalion. Hart's shoulder patch is a white eight surrounded by a white circle. The 8th Signal Battalion is a white eight with an upward pointing gold arrow through it on a blue background. I don't recognise the insignia.

I have a guess

I'm watching Showtime right now and McNamera has a 1 on his shoulder where Hart has his 8... maybe it is a sign of rank or where they're from?

Anytime you watch a world war two movie and you look on the shoulders you can see a patch, this denotes the unit. if they've been transferred from another unit then they'll have the 1st unit they were in on the left shoulder and the one that they're now in on the right.

with Colin Farrell his unit patch is the 8th army corps. Since he's more part of staff and not in combat it's a way of saying he doesent belong to a specific division or regiment for all you canadian/brit military types but he belongs to a branch that looks over several infantry units. Bruce Willis' unit patch is actually of a division since he is a frontline officer, he's in the weather dirt and grime his unit is the 1st U.S Infantry Division, I believe (dont quote me) that they fought in the ardennes (battle of the bulge.) the 1st Div. Is an actual infantry unit or regiment.

Actually you are half right.

In the army a soldier wears his current unit on his/her left shoulder. The only soldiers permitted to wear a unit insignia on their right shoulder are those who have been deployed to a combat region. If a soldier has been deployed with more than one unit, they disply the unit most recently active. Or in the case of officers, they may choose.

As for the Unit patch worn by Lt. Hart, that is the 8th Corps. their services were spread fairly wide throught Europe toward the end of the war.

reply

That may be true for the current military but as of world war two standards, the only way you can wear multiple unit insignia is if you've been transferred from one unit to the other. They hadnt taken into consideration combat regions and they stayed with one unit unless tasked to another in which point they would still retain their original unit patch since they were officially with that unit.

as for Lt Hart's patch it is indeed the 8th corps and I had stated that in my response.

your standards for which patch to where when are clearly based on a post 1945 standard so in this case I would say you are half right.
