Who is this Mamet clown?

After watching this movie I had to look up who wrote this awful Steven Seagal script. Then I see that it was written and directed by the same guy and on the boards he's getting all kinds of praise...are you guys srs?

reply

Yes.

I don't know, his writing is great. The Untouchables, Wag the Dog, Ronin, Glengarry Glen Ross. But the movies he's scripted and directed have been terrible, I can only recall Heist and Spartan. He manages to get talented casts that turn good performances, but the movies themselves fall flat. He should stop directing and just write...

reply

Really? Glengarry Glen Ross, Heist, State and Main, The Spanish prisoner, Oleanna, Homicide, House of games. All solid films ranging from good to great, I'd even say some classics in there too. One of THE strongest and most prolific writer/directors of our time surely? And you think he should quit?! Fair enough.

reply

His films are only good when they touch upon a moral dilemma or are based on his plays. Like Homicide, Oleanna, House of Games, even Redbelt to a certain degree. Meanwhile he's so into cons and scams he just has to put it out of his system, Spanish Prisoner is more about the actual con, than the central character, and it's understandable since it's probably hard to stage a play like SP, Heist, Spartan, with the same result - it'd be boring and totally pointless. In movies he tries to do what he can't do on stage. So yes, Heist, there it is.

Mamet didn't direct Glengarry. James Foley did. That's why it works so much better than the Mamet-directed ones.

Dude has a point, sorta.

I like mamets movies and his plays, but when the movie is not, or has not been a play, it seems to lose something.

Plays to screen direction great

Well, I personally found 'Heist' to be really predictable; the twists could be spotted a mile away. The characters (specially Mamet's wife character) was thoroughly unlikable in their smart-ass mannerisms.

"Thank you."

Mamet is just a routine director. His scripts simply need someone who is a better cineaste.

Go back to the Steven Seagal movies, kid, you're embarrassing yourself.
