Similar to Thief?

Anyone notice a good deal of similarity between this film and Michael Mann's fist picture, Thief(1981)?
I just keep seeing this long and complex film, virtually defined by its dialogue, about a high-stakes heist that ends with a series of double-crosses and a burst or two of violence.
In that sense, Heist and Thief are very similar, I think.
Any thoughts?

Absolutely and on so many different levels. First, the lead actors DeNiro and Hackman often play extremely shrewd outside-the-law individuals who characters plan things well in advance; DeNiro and Hackman are themselves in the top ten category of best actors in the world, possibly even top five. Second, there's a doublecross of partners in both movies. Third, a long range con is a device in both films. Fourth, both are filmed partly IN MONTREAL. Fifth, not only in Montreal but AT THE SAME DAMN DOCKS!!! Sixth, both start out with a successful job that involves stealing diamonds. Seventh, both end up with stealing gold. Eight, both look like the "bad guy" get's away with the gold, before we find out that the Deniro/Hackman character was three steps ahead of the bad guy. Ninth, both have the main character have a girlfriend/wife. This may sound obvious but it's not a guarantee.

??? Wait a second. You said Thief. I was thinking of the movie The Score. Ignore everything I said.

This question was posted over a year ago, I only got around to seeing it today.

Absolutely. And you even have the immensely despicable crime boss villain. While De Vito doesn't threaten to prostitute Hackman's wife or kill his whole family like Prosky threatens to do to Caan in Thief, he is still an evil piece of a s hit.
