It was a good movie, I agree. I stumbled on it while travelling outside the US...I had never heard of it, but I saw Gene Hackman on-screen and thought I'd watch a bit. After a few minutes, the dialogue and acting had hooked me...it was great! I had to get up early the next day for a meeting, but I just had to watch through to the end, and was not surprised to find David Mamet's name in the credits.

You're right. truely amazing film. like most of Mamet's films. I think the only Mamet film I watched and was dissapointed was "State and Main". This one is a gripping film. The cast, The dialog, the twists. Everything seemed to be perfect. But about Spartan, this is also a great film that works well with repeated viewing. I watched it about 4 times and it only got better and better. Try to give it a second chance. Heist scores a perfect 10/10 in my scale. I just hope Mamet will keep on bringing us more classics.

I thought it was very disappointing indeed. I completely agree with the reviewer (whose review appears on the main page). There were far too many twists and the plot was so contrived as to be laughable. Using twists in a plot is not something that should be overdone. If there are too many, you simply stop caring because you doubt every single thing you see and hear. In the end, the film became boring because of this overly convoluted story.

Many of the crews tactics depended on absurd coincidences which simply would not have worked in real life. There were far too many things which could have gone wrong and foiled the whole plan.

Also, it was a dreadful idea of Mamet's to give his wife (Pidgeon) a part just to keep her happy. She was a terrible actor!

It's a shame, because Gene Hackman is terrific actor and it was a waste of his talents. Check out "The Conversation" or "The Quick and the Dead" for example.
