I'm surprised no one has mentioned the similarity of this movie to Rashomon (which, in films anyway, invented this genre). It's also similar to Courage Under Fire (which was directly influenced by Rashomon).
I'll give this film the upper hand in at least one category...the story here was much more emotional than in Rashomon.
Well, a crime committed then everyone lying then the real truth coming out is a pretty much a common storyline at this point. Was it Aristotle who said there are only seven types of stories in the world?
shareActually I think someone else said it (and I think the number was higher than 7), but in any case, it's the on-screen representation of the various stories that make the plot device unique, not the plot itself.
