Sam was retarded? I thought he had autism.

I'm reading IMDb posts and I learn that Sam was retarded. I thought he had autism all this time. I've only seen this movie once, so I don't remember if they said he was retarded or not. Does the movie make this clear?

well, what do you think retarded actually means? you think there is an actual mental disorder called retardation? Being retarded literally means being behind. And if you are autistic, you are behind in some mental areas, such as ability to process social information and what not. So technically speaking, autistic people are retarded.
