Why did they start the show over?

When it's truly season 15 and 16?

Now it's saying season one and two? How is that possible with the same characters?

reply

From what I read previously it's because this class isn't the next generation. Emma was the next generation since she was spikes daughter and in the next gen original members from degrassi high and kids of degrassi street where in it. Snake, spike, joey, joeys daughter was in it she was younger and didn't go to degrassi but was still a character.

This class isn't the next generation but it isn't the next class following it either so it doesn't make any sense. There's BEEN "next classes" and there will be others when this current class leaves the show. The show was simply "Degrassi" following Season 9 when all of the originals left the show because the classes of Seasons 10-14 weren't the next generation. Netflix obviously wanted a new incarnation rather than just continuing the current show that was just cancelled off of TeenNick and MTV Canada, so they made that clear by giving the subtitle "Next Class". But again, there's been next classes and this "next class" will be replaced by another like "the next generation" was replaced by another, hence why they simply settled with DEGRASSI because adding anything else would be useless. The students will always change but the setting will remain the same throughout the run. What will they do when the current class leaves? Keep "Next Class" in the title? They would have to drop it, so they should have just left TNG going and kept it as "Degrassi".

reply

I completely forgot they took out the next gen and it was just degrassi for a while! I have no answer then. Probably something to so with Netflix like stated.

It's not even truly Seasons 15 and 16. It's truly just Season 15. Netflix just decided to split up the season into two smaller ones for whatever reason when they decided to air them as an entirely new show. DUMB! But all these episodes airing this year really are just ONE season and would have been aired as such had Degrassi not been cancelled. Netflix completely screwed things up here, not just with how they went about marketing this season off as start of a new show, but also with it's season splitting. Ten episodes a season really? And then giving us these hiatuses like we have all the time in the world to wait for a show that's filmed all of these episodes last year? And it doesn't help that they're airing the seasons out on the same day. If they're going to do this, they mind as well be ordering more episodes so we can at least have more time with the show then just have new episodes two times during the year.

reply

In not interested in the new class anyway. The old degrassi is fine with me.

reply

I thought it "started over" because Degrassi was canceled, but revived by Netflix, so they revamped it. It's still the same Degrassi, but for me Degrassi ended in like Season 8 and a new Degrassi started with Clare's class, since Emma's class was finished/moved on. They did it all over again with "completing" Clare's class by graduation and now it follows Maya's class.

reply

They should cancel and start over. We have all the drama they could do done several times. The school is a pc zone now and that eliminates drama. Start over from scratch.

reply

That's what I thought they were going to do when they 'started over' but it still included Maya and her "group" which is still connected to the Degrassi we know. In order to completed start over (to me anyway) would have a completely new cast, no Mr. Simpson, nothing that ties the "new series" to the Degrassi TNG/Degrassi.

With that said, Maya's class for me has been the most annoying, lame characters in Degrassi.

reply

Maybe now they seen the error of their ways and won't make the same mistake again.

reply

Because it was time. The characters are still cannon, just like the Degrassi Junior High/High characters who came back in TNG

The original Degrassi cast graduated when the show ended in 1992, and Degrassi TNG started 9 years later. It's already been 9 years since the main TNG cast graduated in Season 7. Next Class probably should have started then with a new title for each new gen.

reply

I assume you're asking about it becoming "Next Class" because the transition out of Next Gen already happened years ago (not sure what the others on here are talking about lol.)

"Next Gen" ended when Emma was no longer on the show.

It has now changed from simply "Degrassi" to Degrassi: Next Class because technically, "Degrassi" was cancelled by the network. Netflix picked it up and renamed it "Degrassi: Next Class" as a Netflix Original. (Although it is not being shown a couple different stations as well.)

reply

why did the Jackson 5 start over as the Jacksons?

Because they changed record labels and Motown claimed ownership of the name "Jackson 5"

TeenNick co-funded the show. They may have some ownership over the name "Degrassi : The next generation"

Why do you think when Doug went from Nickelodeon to Disney, it was called "brand Spankin' new Doug" then "Disney's Doug"?

Nickelodeon had ownership of "Doug" as a TV show name. so Disney had to add something to it

I think at least part of the reason was so new viewers would not feel obligated to watch the first 14 seasons, which can seem overwhelming. They could just start "New Class" from the beginning (even though a lot of those characters started already in previous seasons).

ETA: Or even if that was not part of the reason, it is more convenient and perhaps less confusing to some.

Yeag this show want on for so long that they ran out of issues and new material. Start fresh
