Breaking Bad

How many of you fans of The Wire also liked Breaking Bad? I've just started to give Breaking Bad another shot. But it just feels so childish compared to The Wire. It's like all the problems that the characters face in Breaking Bad would not even warrant a 2 minute scene on The Wire. I know that they have a different focus, but the main idea is still that they're in this drug game, but it's almost like there's no other players on other sides in Breaking Bad. Whereas in the Wire everyone is a player and everyone is on different sides trying to win their own game.

BB was good... when I first watched it. Actually it got me started on watching TV shows. I've since finished The Sopranos, MadMen and of course The Wire. I've also -as-of-this-writing- seen every episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Orange Is the New Black . Right now, I'm reaching the end of Gilmore Girls in eager anticipation of the release of A Year in The Life. All of them great shows, that I like for varying reasons. However I think Breaking Bad is probably the weakest of the bunch. Even though BB is a massive adrenaline ride, only a handful of characters are developed and many of the major supporting characters come across as underutilized, particularly Marie and Walt Jnr.

That being said, its been a year and a half since I finished Breaking Bad and just under nine months since I finished The Wire. In terms of what both shows are, they are entirely different beasts- Breaking Bad is a modern day western black comedy about a chemistry-teacher-turned-drug-lord. The Wire is a realistic portrayal of a city, that exposes the systemic problems that are underpinning American politics. Between the two shows, The Wire is the one that rewards the most re-watching and I'll probably rewatch it and write down every detail there is on screen.

I wouldn't mind a re-watch of Breaking Bad though, because watching Hal from Malcolm in the Middle kill an army of Nazi's is its own reward.

Breaking Bad is a character study type show while The Wire is focused on the inner-workings of the city (a city study?) so they aren't really comparable in my opinion and it would be reasonable to not like one while liking the other.

They are 2 different shows. Breaking bad is well written, has great dialog, and great fun, but Walter White would get shot in the back of the head by the 3rd episode of The Wire.

You really can't compare the two. They are both in their own right. I usually binge a drama, then comedy, then drama at minimum so I won't compare the similar genres. Rinsing the palate, might say.

But ultimately to me, The Wire does win out due to it's realism and how the show actually attempts to open one's eyes to societal ills. Really though, it's just a matter of opinion when comes down to it. Apples to oranges, really.
