why didn't he bash muslims or Mohammed?

He insulted nearly every nation, every religion, but didn't even mention mohammed or anything.

reply

sort of. "f--k osama bin laden, al qaida, and backward cave-dwelling fundamentalist a--holes everywhere...."

reply

i mean he insulted JC, Buddha, etc, but didnt even mention mohammed. bin laden and alqaeda dont really represent islam, they are just a bunnch of islamic extremists or terrorists, whatever u call them. It was really offensive when he used the f-word on JC and other religious leaders. The thing that bothers me is why the hell did he not use the f-word over islam or their mohammed.

reply

you're reaching ,rock

the only religious figure that he ranted on specifically was the first one you mentioned.....he said nothng of buddha, or any other religious figure.

I'm figuring that you have an axe to grind...a big enough axe that you imagined things that weren't actually in that scene.

in the context of the film...it makes sense that Irish catholic character mention his specific faith in his rant and not others(by name)...

reply

did he not? when he started insulting JC, i just skipped the whole scene. didnt realize JC was the last guy he bashed.

reply

It's a movie. The character is flawed. I understand if you skip the channel if Keith Olbermann is insulting Jesus but again, you were watching a movie! Why skip the scene?
If you're Jewish would you skip scenes of Nazis in Schindler's List? Would Muslims skip over scenes of the countless movies where they are portrayed as terrorists? Gimme a break dude. Movies are all fake, stop taking them so seriously.

reply

You are such an ignorant ass "He insulted nearly every nation, every religion, but didn't even mention mohammed or anything" Then you later come back and admit that you didn't even watch the scene because your precious savior was insulted........ "when he started insulting JC, i just skipped the whole scene"

Obama is a secret Muslim and Ed Norton didnt want to earn the future ire of the future leader of the free world. Why the hell else would he omit Mohamed?

reply

I endorse this post. What a moron.

reply

"did he not? when he started insulting JC, i just skipped the whole scene."

There it is, folks!

reply

I went to do something else for a while when that insult scene in the toile started...

pointless garbage like Do the right thing. No wonder Spike Lee doesn't get any new movies when he pushes out crud like this.

reply

hahaha wow, some amazingly close-minded people here. The movie is about a realistic depiction of a person going to prison; you don't have to agree with what he's saying to appreciate the power of this monologue.

It's his reflection trying to blame other people for how bad his life is, but then he realizes, "No, it's me. I'm the one who is making my life bad."

It's a scene about a character venting out his prejudices (and the vast majority of people have prejudices, even if they're not his) and then coming to the realization that doing so is just a scapegoat. If the Nazis had the same realization, the holocaust wouldn't have happened. If everyone had this same realization, prejudice wouldn't exist.

To answer OP's question, he was already trash talking about middle easterners, so it probably would have been overkill if he just kept going on and on about muslims. He's not a racist, he has a lot of prejudice spread across a lot of different peoples. He talked trash about Jesus because he's a Catholic and honestly does believe Jesus went to Hell for a weekend and now rules over Heaven; he probably doesn't believe in Mohammed.

To the OP:

Just saw this film, and Monty (the main character)goes the hell off on literally everybody in New York in his rant---I like how he was an equal opportunity racist---he insulted white folks as well as everybody else----he didn't let anybody off the hook at all,and yes,he did go the hell off on Muslim fundamentalists---I don't know how you missed that part, seeing as it came before he trashed Jesus and the Catholic church. He didn't have to mention Mohammed to let people know who he was talking about---it was made very plain when scenes of Bin Laden flashed across the screen.

@Jrdn853

You pretty much nailed it----I loved it when he went all the hell off on the Wall Street stockbrokers (that part of the rant has even more relevance now due to the present economic situation) and the Catholic Church for covering up the abuse of children (sorry, but they deserved all that scorn for trying to cover all that s*** up, the bastards). Also, it was real touching near the end, when he sees a vision of all the people of color he insulted in his rant, and seems to realize that as much as they pissed him off, he was going to miss them and practically everybody else in his life. I loved it when the little boy on the bus waved at him and wrote his name on the window, then Monty responded back by writing his name just before his dad pulls off in the car----that was a really sweet and surprisingly touching moment--the best in the whole film.

I couldn't wait to see this flick, because until yesterday, it was the only Spike Lee movie I hadn't seen, and the one I've heard the least about. I'm guessing that's probably because it dosen't have as much controversial material as some of his other films, plus it's unique in that it's his only other film with mainly white leads (SON OF SAM was the other). Liked seeing the underrated Barry Pepper as his friend Francis---he was excellent,as well as the other cast, including the sweet and lovely Rosario Dawson (who's also a social activist in her own right). All in all, it was a pretty good film, and I've never understood why it seems to be the most overlooked of Spike's films--he really tried to stretch out and do something different outside his usual subject matter for a change.

reply

That's probably because the director would recieve death threats from other *beep* But I liked that scene a lot.

reply

Did I miss him insulting the Jews? I can't recall.

reply

yeah, he did mention them very briefly lol.

reply

Given the fact that Jews make up a significant portion of New York City (there's a Golda Meir Square in Manhattan), I think they were let off quite easily in the rant.

reply

Cause Spike Lee was afraid of Al Queda?

reply

Obviously not since he specifically mentioned OBL and El Qaeda. He also said something about camel jockeys I think. He also ranted about the "Pakis" who are predominantly Muslim. I think they could have avoided mentioning JC by name and talked about the faith instead.

reply

Actually he did talk about the church...anyway IMHO he could have left out JC.

reply

Because he was bashing sub-cultures, not religions.
He didn't say anything about Moses or Krishna, did he?

Yea, there is a reason for that though. You do realise the people who follow that religion are potentially dangerous to people who slander their faith? Not worth the risk.
