Horatio Caine's original back story.

This is the correct back story on Horatio Caine that was originally posted on the CBS website, I first read it when the series first started and was lucky enough to find it again after reading so many made up accounts of his origins. His only contact with the New York Police Department was while he was involved in tracking down Walter Resden who had also killed in Miami.

This bio was originally posted here on Aug 10, 2004 at 4:36pm.

Name: Horatio Caine CSI Level/Rank: Three (Lieutenant) Heigth: 6'/182cm Weight: 180lbs/82kg Place of Birth: Miami, Fl Date of Birth: 04/07/1960 Education: B.S. in Chemistry (Florida State Univ.) Special Skills: Arson, Explosives Martial Status: Divorced

Raised in 1960s Miami, by age 16 Caine had experienced a lifetime: Civil Right marches, Cuban freedom fights, violent race riots, and the rise of drug culture.

His mother, a single parent in a time that did not favor such a definition of family taught Caine that strength resided in you mind, not your hand. Though she was demanding, her love protected him until she was killed by a drug dealer that she stood up to. At 17, while other teenagers were learning to disco, Caine set out to help the police find her killer. By the time the murderer was sentenced to life, Caine knew he had found his calling. To protect his city.

Caine entered the Police Academy after high school, but quickly discovered that the beat left him bored. When he realized that the evidence-cracking CSIs were the people who actually solved the crimes, he enrolled in university and, four years later, Chemistry degree in hand, he was a level I Criminalist with the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Rising quickly through the ranks, Caine grew frustrated with the departmental bureaucracy and threatened to quit. Al Humpries came to his rescue by offering to train him as his second-in-command with the Bomb Squad. Humpries became the father-figure Caine had never had.

When Megan Donner stepped down as head of the Crime Lab, the Police Chief asked Caine to take over. Although he had thrived as a member of the Bomb Squad, Cane missed what had drawn him to police work in the first place. The science of catching the bad guy. He accepted the position.

A three-dimensional thinker, Caine can rapidly understand how pieces fit into a puzzle. He knows that science ultimately provides the solution, but he also knows that there is more to crime-solving than blood spatter and DNA. When it comes to protecting his city, Horatio doesn't just trust science. He trusts his guts.

I hope you find this useful and amend this bio accordingly.

A little different explanation was given by Caine to a little boy who's Mom was killed by his Dad. He told the little kid that he lost his mom the same way. This was Season 4 Episode 17. Also, I heard yet another story and I don't remember which episode but Caine was talking to Rick from IAB and stated that in order to save his mother's life, he had to kill his father.

Yes his mom being killed by his abusive father was Horatio's backstory, though I'm unsure where he grew up. It was never specified whether it was in Florida or New York, although I think he had to kill his dad in New York but I don't know where he grew up at, not much is known about Horatio's early life at all. It was known that he worked in several places throughout his career, he worked on the Miami PD's bomb squad and worked undercover in Pensacola when his son was conceived, he worked as a homicide detective in New York and Miami and he was on the Miami Homicide squad when he was asked to take over the newly created CSI team in 1997.

I;m in the first season watching. I got the first 5 dvd's at goodwill. Is there any time he says how his brother was killed? I saw one him talking about it to his nephew that was fighting in school about his father a bad man. Horatio saying it was his job to make people believe that.
