Maybe his defeat in the duel shattered his own illusion of invincibility and he couldn't handle the shock
This, basically. Griffith is a control freak, as he admits himself,
"I get everything that I want." He didn't reckon with Guts being strong enough to win his independence, and when he did, that turned his world upside down. Of course, the relationship between Griffith & Guts (and Casca) is somewhat more complicated than just that. To Griffith, Guts was his only friend (even if he didn't realize it at the time) and his greatest asset, taking care of all Griffith's dirty work and protecting his whiter-than-white image.
If we study Griffith through the series, we notice that he is almost asexual in that he has no romantic tendencies and uses sex purely for extrinsic reasons, such as when he sold his body to that old noble to fund his army. With Guts having emasculated him, Griffith used Charlotte for comfort sex to make himself feel empowered again. Later we see that same habit manifest itself in a much darker form, when he becomes Femto and rapes Casca, not for sex, but to punish Guts for making him 'forget his dream'.
