Did Griffith mess things up because of Gatsu? *SPOILER*

I mean after they duel and Gatsu leaves the Band of the Hawk why would Griffith seduce/rape the princess? That was a pretty dumb move since it was obvious the princess loved him and would do anything to marry him.

Did Griffith become reckless out of sadness or did he just forget about his dream all because Gatsu left him? Maybe his defeat in the duel shattered his own illusion of invincibility and he couldn't handle the shock.

What do you guys think?

the Princess was 16 and he did not rape her, she willingly wanted to have sex with Griffith.

What messed it up was the King of Midland did not like the idea of his precious daughter having sex with Griffith without his consent.

The King of Midland had high expectations on Griffith, he was shocked that Griffith would actually have sex with his daughter.

The King felled great betrayal.

You missed the part where the King wouldn't expect anyone to marry his daughter because he is in fact in love with his daughter. Hell he even tries to molest her

Yes, the anime leaves out a few crucial pieces of info that was in the manga, basically he knew the princess loves him, so he's using that to try and gain power, the king is going mad because of his dead wife (current and former), and he sees his former wife in his now teenage daughter and tries to rape her to keep the bloodline pure, whereas he saw Griffith as an commoner, so how dare a commoner touch a princess.

This, basically. Griffith is a control freak, as he admits himself, "I get everything that I want." He didn't reckon with Guts being strong enough to win his independence, and when he did, that turned his world upside down. Of course, the relationship between Griffith & Guts (and Casca) is somewhat more complicated than just that. To Griffith, Guts was his only friend (even if he didn't realize it at the time) and his greatest asset, taking care of all Griffith's dirty work and protecting his whiter-than-white image.

If we study Griffith through the series, we notice that he is almost asexual in that he has no romantic tendencies and uses sex purely for extrinsic reasons, such as when he sold his body to that old noble to fund his army. With Guts having emasculated him, Griffith used Charlotte for comfort sex to make himself feel empowered again. Later we see that same habit manifest itself in a much darker form, when he becomes Femto and rapes Casca, not for sex, but to punish Guts for making him 'forget his dream'.
