Berserk and Hellraiser

I just watched Hellraiser and Hellraiser II and noticed that the Cenobites in that film are awefully similar to the Demon Kings in Berserk that seem to follow Guts around at the beginning. The one with the shades is especially similar to the fat cenobite in Hellraiser.

Also, the method in which a Demon King is born is similar to that of Hellraiser in that there is a gestation period and a new creature is born.

Thoughts?

Thought they looked familiar but couldn't guess where

Its possible Clive Barker was inspired by the manga. And also, don't know if you're much of a Street Fighter fan, but I always thought Nosferatu Zod inspired the design of Akuma aka Gouki.

I am a fan of both Miura's Berserk and Barker's Hellraiser. The movie Hellraiser was released in 1987. It was based on Clive Barker's novella The Hellbound Heart published 1986.

According to Wikipedia, Miura premiered a prototype of Berserk in 1988. The first volume was published in 1990. the Demon Kings would only be revealed much later in the series.

The Demon King's do have an uncanny resemblance to the Cenobites. If the dates are accurate then one would have to assume if anyone was inspired, then it would be Miura who was inspired by Barker's Hellraiser.

Ah, didn't know that. For some reason I thought that Berserk came out in the 70's. Definitely make sense for Miura to be inspired by Barker

I saw that too, Akuma is exactly like Zodd.

In an interview published in the Berserk Illustration Book Miura explicitly states that he adopted elements from films such as Hellraiser and The Name of the Rose for Berserk.

This is exactly what ran through my mind the first time I watched Berserk.

Ya Hellraiser inspired the Godhand mythology, the behelit(puzzlebox)they both open up a portal between earth and hell, and the cenobites picking a person to join them if they have suffered enough.
