How is the ending NOT brilliant?

It's great storytelling if you ask me. It happens suddenly, but it's foreshadowed from the beginning, it dovetails beautifully with little things about Griffith that are easily missed the first time around, and it's SO bleak and tragic. Perhaps the show was meant to be continued, but it wasn't, so you have to look at the anime how it stands, which is to have Guts trapped in an apocalyptic Hell on Earth, fighting an endless battle that cannot be won.

the ending is a bit confusing in the anime because they cut a lot of the supernatural things from the manga, like Puck or the Skull Knight, so the events in the eclipse seems too sudden and out of place, whereas in the manga we are used to that stuff by that point

Dude u have no idea. The ending is not brilliant because this isnt the ending. From anime alone (ep1) you can tell that he Guts gets out and continues to fight.

I must admit that I like everything about this show BUT the ending. Way too tragic for my taste and seeing two of my favorite characters being tortured the way they are is not my idea of brilliance. To end with such an evil act as what is done to Caska, was unnecessary in my opinion. Don't get me wrong. This is easily one of the best animes I've ever watched, but not because of the ending.

I just finished watching this anime. And I agree. The ending was seriously messed up, for me at least. But overall I enjoyed it. Loved the characters and the plot. Once again, the ending sucks.

Thats not the ending, its the start.... the golden age is basically a prologue

then they're taking their sweet time releasing the next part, it better be outstanding if its taken 15 years to create...

It was based on a manga that's been written over the last two decades. The 1997 anime was based on just one of the many arcs of the story, and it's currently being redone in a three part movie. Part one just came out in Japan, and once the three movies are done they're going to continue the rest of the manga's story in some kind of series or maybe more movies.

Are they going to change the quality/style after these 3 movies? I dont like this CG animation thing.. Sure. It wont need to be fully handmade, but not fully computer animated either.. i mean geezzzz...
