Jodi

She turned out to be the spiteful ex.

reply

Yes she did. I can not understand why Jodi got so upset with Bette when Bette was trying to include her in the conversation at the dinner party scene. Then there's the scene when Bette fixes up her loft and Jodi, instead of being appreciative says, "it's my loft". IMO, Bette was trying to be nice, have the place look pretty for her, not being "controlling".

One of my deaf friends pointed out that this would annoy them, too, because that person is supposed to be their partner, not their translator. Sometimes, deaf people don't want their disability highlighted or focused on. Jodi says she knows she's going to miss things and always will, so Bette's frantic signing was, in her mind, unnecessary.

Jodi also mentioned that Bette wasn't that good at signing. Part of that comment was clearly spite, but considering how quickly Bette tried to learn it, it's possible that she really wasn't that good and was more of a distraction than she meant to be. I mean, if you're good at reading lips, that's probably better than dealing with mediocre sign language.

OK, thanks for shining some light on that. So now when I re-watch that scene I have a better understanding of Jodi's remarks and behavior.

There's a scene when Bette whispers to Jodi, I could fall in love with you, something like that, and in another scene Jodi IM Bette, I could fall in love with you to. I don't know how Jodi knew what Bette said, unless she has some 'hearing' in her right ear. I know its 'tv' but that question pops up in my head every time I re-watch that episode. Jodi nor Bette ever say that Jodi has some hearing/partial hearing so how did Jodi know what Bette said?

reply

I assumed she felt the movements of her lips--if I remember correctly, Bette says it right up against her ear. Our lips make specific shapes depending on the sounds we make. It's amazing how people who are deprived of one sense can still hear, see, etc. by using the rest of their senses and adapting.

Not for nothing though, Jodi was cheated on, humiliated and made for a fool.
I LOVE Bette but the more I watch the show over and over, the more I realize how self-centered and narcissistic Bette is. She HAS to be top dog, needs to have the best, has to be in control and it has to be on her turf and terms.

I think Jodi reacted with such emotional pain in the only way that her artistic self felt right. And as one last stab at Bette since she felt so damamged by her in the longrun. Jodi knew she had much more of an emotional turmoil to recover from, versus Bette going back into a loving relationship, with a child and a life previously built. In the end, it seemed kinda 'fair' to me.

Spiteful ex? This is after Bette promised her she wouldnt break her heart then cheated on her with Tina and left her. Behaving like that wasnt very dignified I agree but Bette had it coming. I am a massive Bette fan by the way but just playing devils advocate.

Also, although I think Jody overreacted a touch at the dinner party, I can see why she was upset. Bette was (unintentionally) highlighting her disability and I think making it more of an issue than it should have been.

Yeah, this. Jodi had never before really let anyone into her heart, to allow herself to fall in love before. Finally she does, with Bette, and Bette had chased her to give her another chance, after Jodi had bailed. Bette does then promise to not break her heart, and then does break her heart. That kind of situation would suck and hurt a lot for anyone, but even more for someone like Jodi, who'd always protected herself against it, then finally let her guard down.

While I do think she overreacted a bit, more than Bette unintentionally highlighting her disability, I think the main problem was she'd already told Jodi to not interpret for her and that the reality was she was going to miss conversation in social situations like that, with hearing people. Rather than respecting Jodi's wishes, Bette continued doing it anyway.

Not that I don't understand why Bette did it, and I'd have probably done the same thing -- the first time. It was the first time Jodi was meeting all of Bette's friends. Bette knew everyone, and Jodi didn't. Bette wanted her to feel comfortable and included.
