Meh.

Originally I gave it a 7/10 but after rewatching it I lowered it to a 6/10. It is very predictable and too much of a Jack Black vehicle. It isn't necessarily bad but not great either.

I've always found this movie to be quite enjoyable.

I'll give you that it is written for Jack Black to play his usual spiel. To play his slobby persona, but to show case his musical side too. So, it depends how much you can take of him playing his usual sort of character.

It was an absurd premise, of course. Like he'd have been able to wonder into a school, pretending to be somebody else without any kind of checks. Or the police on finding out what had happened, would turn up at the school, only to decide not to bother coming to look for him after he ran away, and hid out in erm.... his own home. Or that the parents would've struggled to get into The Battle Of The Bands after saying that there were kidnapped children on the premises. Or would've just forgiven Dewey everything, after realising the band was good.

It's not really supposed to be taken seriously. And Jack Black was entertaining enough to make it watchable. And it wasn't like he was trying to steal the show. The child actors had their moments too, which requires the lead actor to cooperate with the young cast around him. At heart, there is a message about not pushing kids too hard, letting them follow their passions and to enjoy their journey and let them be kids whilst they still have the chance. And we saw Dewey improve as a person, after getting to know the kids too. It was sort of feel good.

Meant for watching on lazy afternoons, not for any kind of heavy thinking.

The child actors were better than most.

Meh to your meh. School of Rock was SENSATIONAL!!!
