I've been reading reviews of the first season, and every one seems to agree that the self contained episodes don't do the series justice.
So I think I just want to focus on the laughing man arc.
But which episodes are those please?

They are all labelled complex. It tells you shortly after the intro when the name of the episode shows up. I can't remember all the episodes that are complex but I know the last 6 are.
shareI disagree about the stand-alone episodes not doing the series justice. It's not even really possible to view the series as a whole without them (they are one half of the stand-alone / complex premise, after all). Think of them as necessary, bit-sized explorations of more simple ideas between the main course that is the Laughing Man arc, which can be pretty hard to digest at some points.
Perhaps their biggest value lies in fleshing out each of the characters, particularly some of the more peripheral ones. Even if you don't particularly like certain ones, they're only short, and won't detract from your overall enjoyment.
