What was the deal with Serano at the end of G1?

when he pulled the door handle and it made that "injection" sound, what was up with that? was he assassinated? mind wiped? what? and who was that guy with the case? i feel like i'm missing something that's supposed to be obvious.
and for that matter, was it even really meant for Serano? how could the assassin or whatever have known in advance that Serano would insist on opening the door himself, despite being accompanied by two others.

As many times as I've rewatched this series, I still don't understand that part. To me, I always assumed when he pressed the door handle, his car was going to blow up or something. So maybe he was assassinated. Or perhaps, it's up to our imagination, and because of this it's purposely meant to be confusing to the viewer. It's kind of a "WTF" moment.

You can always try looking to see if there is an explanation on wikipedia. I haven't read the spoilers on there for quite a while, so I can't actually remember if there was an explanation for that part.

yeah, Wikipedia's got nothing, nor does TV Tropes(heck, neither pages even mention Serano as far as i can find). even the few specific threads on message boards i found only have the same question, but nothing different as far as actual answers.

I think the clear implication is that the car exploded when Serano pulled the doorhandle. There is also an audible explosion sound effect after the scene cuts away, if you'll notice.

Here are my thoughts on Serano's assassination:

If you'll recall, the guy who is walking away in the parking garage is mumbling to himself, as if talking to Serano, about the need for moral flexibility. Serano testified in order to clear his conscience, in the same way as Imakarusu who was assassinated previously. If someone were willing to kill Imakarusu for doing the same thing, that person would be willing to kill Serano, who possessed the same knowledge Imakarusu did. These circumstances indicate that there was still an active conspiracy, and that the Serano was killed to prevent him from revealing the full depth of that conspiracy.

As far as who opened the door, I don't really think it mattered who opened the door, because Serano would still have been in close enough proximity to car to be killed in the explosion. Whoever opened the door would've been doing so for the purpose of Serano climbing in, after all.

I've ask myself this question too, and I think that your answer is possible, but I prefer another one...

We knew that the laughing man (kid) has started a copy cat phenomenon. The man is perhaps one of them continuing the revenge (about the vaccine not being approved). What is interesting is that the man becomes a "stand alone complex" because the original never "officialy" existed. So all makes sense, well sort of...

For me there is no conspiracy left, only the money trail was pertinent, and this part is now resolved at the end.

BTW, I've watched this show at least 5 times, and it is amazing how profound the ideas are, fascinating...and I still don't understand everything ;^)
