Tachikoma Question

Okay, I know it's just a 'toon, but they've gone to great lengths to make everything as real as possible, so...

How do the Tachikoma motivate? Their wheels are more like furniture casters than tires and seem too small to: (1) provide the amount of speed they ride at (on the highway), and (2) provide the braking ability they show at those speeds. If the wheels do provide the motivative force, then the amount of stress/heat that would build up would be enormous at the revolutions/minute they'd be going. Not to mention that when stopping, one side of the wheels would slice off from the friction.

Anybody know?

Don't think too hard. You're not gonna outthink Masamune Shirow who's actually got a mechanical engineering degree. His designs are all functionally-plausible.

They change the rubber pads on their legs most likely.

OH THE HUGE MANATEE!!!

Nevermind the furniture casters they had in SAC, how do they roll around in 2nd GIG?
Their wheels were replaced with triangle pads...

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.

reply

The triangle pads are just the circular wheels with three divisions and a hinge, so that they fold out into a sturdier 'foot' when they aren't zipping around.
