Kusanagi and the Bartender

I seem to remember an episode in the first season where the Major snuck up on this bartender, invisible, to talk to him for some reason. Does anyone remember what this was about, or if it was part of the Laughing Man case? And how come the bartender character seems to have such a strange voice in the dub?

can't remember exactly, but wasn't he some kind of undercover informant? was the strange voice because they were talking electronically?

I need to watch the series again

He's not exactly an undercover informant. The term "undercover" implies that he is actually an agent of the government, but that's not the case. He's more like a guy who is plugged in to the cybercriminal underground and is willing to part with information for a price. The better term for that is "confidential informant," since he secretly feeds the Major info, but doesn't actually work for her or Section 9.

I have a theory about his voice. I think he got a substandard cyber-body in some back-alley body swap. If you consider that he's someone who deals in other people's secrets, it makes sense that he would need to dramatically change his appearance in emergencies. In those sorts of situations, he'd probably take whatever he could get.

My impression was that he was an ex-boxer. His body had the build, and in the English dub, he sounded like Mike Tyson.

Indirectly related to the Laughing Man The Major wanted the bartender to give information about the illegal use of interceptors on the Laughing Man section of the police to reporters who came to the bar.
