Connection to Stand Alone Complex?

Does this film have any connection to the Stand Alone Complex series?
Just thought if you wouldn't understand anything if you haven't watched the series first...

Thanks

The two films follow each other. GitS: SAC is in a parallel timeline where the events in the first film never take place. The characters are the same, but the series and the films have nothing to do with each other.

There's no direct link between the Stand Alone and Innocence narratives, but there are some concepts, such as ghost-dubbing, which are established in the series and then used again in the movie. While familiarity with the series isn't necessary, it might help one make sense of the movie, especially on the first viewing.

The direct link of Innocence and Stand Alone Complex is the GITS Manga. Many points and terms in the movies and anime come from that single manga.

But at the end of the movie before the Major disappears doesn't she say something like "This place is a stand alone complex" or something like that? I thought that's where the conection was and the series was just a continuation of the film?

reply

No. They are 2 series parallel to each others.

Stand Alone Complex isn't directed by Oshii neither, but by his disciple Kenji Kamiyama.

Stand Alone Complex is more likely to follow original manga version, with enrichment episodes for the supporting roles.

My recommendation is: to read the original manga first. It gives you essential concept to the Ghost in the Shell World. Then, you can go for Stand Alone Complex Series 1.

Stand Alone Complex Series 2 is a disaster.... the storyline is mediocre and stereotyped. However, you can still watch... for a reference to the Series 1.

Oshii's 2 movies aren't following the original manga's concepts. The characters are twisted by the director's will. Some like it, some don't.... Personally I don't consider Innocence belongs to the Ghost in the Shell Universe. It's more likely to be within Oshii's inner world (which consists of Kerberos Panzer Cop and the Patlabor Movies).

SAC 2ND GIG HAS THE CRAZIEST CLIMAX! I SO WANTED TO SEE THAT KIND OF SITUATION IN THE FUTURE AND IT DELIVERED IT TO ME! YOU MUST'VE SEEN THE DUBBED EPISODES OR SOMETHING!!!

Also you forget to mention to read Ghost In The Shell 2: Man-Machine Interface after reading the first manga.. Unless you just found out about it now.

I think GITS SAC is the best depiction of the GITS universe its faithfull to the manga in many ways and adds more to it in its own right, and has elements of the movies as well, many people say Batou is more dark in the movies, i disagree, we see batou acting dark and distant many times in SAC, Jungle cruise for example. I think both the movies and series are great and add more to GITS, the manga is great aswell, though Man/Machine interface was bit boring due to being Motoko all the time, preferably liked the missing parts GITS 1.5 Human Error Processor, which has more of Batou and section 9.
Out of the three i'd choose GITS: SAC as my favourite

I also like the romance between Batou and Motoko, this especially makes me enjoy it alot more, will it ever happen lol.

anyways in the manga it hints a closeness as it does in the films and series, from my personal view of the manga, the major trusts Batou, so there is a closeness between them, you dont see her act like that with the other characters, plus in the part where Motoko and her boyfriends flat gets blown up, Batou runs like hell through the hospital because he's worried, cos they havent been told whether shes alright i.e. Aramaki's response which is funny, this hints at Batou's affection for the major, and he obviously cares for her, we dont see any actual romance(kissing etc), but we do see romantic tension which then usually results in Batou cracking a joke to get out of them, he's more comical in the manga.
I think the series shows Batou very well and so does the films, we see the comic side to Batou and the serious darker side in both the series and the films, but the films seem to show more of the serious darker side of Batou especially GITS 2, thou we still see the darker side of Batou in SAC. I think the series and films are both amazing, they are faithful in many aspects and have added more to the manga original concept.

Can't wait for S.S.S. :D
