Who contracted with Elektra in the first place?

I missed part of this movie, so I was wondering if someone could clue me in as to who contracted Elektra to kill Abby in the first place? If the Hand wanted her alive, and had their own assassin squad, so its unlikely they would have hired an outsider... who hired Elektra?

I thought Stick(her blind sensei) hired her because he knew she wouldn't go through with killing them and would instead protect them?
