Gibbs' boats

Has it ever been explained how Gibbs get his boat out of the cellar?

reply

No.

reply

Sword, there is no explanation, you can't get a boat up 36 inch wide stairs and out the front door, it's just something the writers wrote with no rhyme or reason,

so long, it's been good to know ya

Thanks for the reply Sam.
I thought that maybe the writers had come up with something hokey.
So it's obviously a big insider joke with no punchline 😉.

When Tim asked one episode Gibbs said "You break the bottle"

reply

Thank You Kaschu,
I thought that I remembered Gibbs giving some odd reason one time.

they painted themselves in a corner with that idea.

I don't think they painted themselves into a corner, but rather it's as 'Sword30' mentioned -- it is a joke with no punchline; a running gag.

That is to say, it seems to me that the writers intentionally made getting the boat out of the basement a mystery, just for the fun of it. Maybe we will be given the punchline in the show's finale -- or maybe not. However, I do not think it is the case that the writers accidentally stumbled into this boat conundrum.

So I don't think they paonted themselves into a corner, but rather they painted themselves exactly where they want to be with this running gag.

I think they already gave the punch line when he said to someone who asked how he got the boat out of the basement, he said "you break the bottle"
however, anyone with half of a brain knows you can't get a boat intact out of a basement with no open walls, it's 100% impossible, so when people ask that question, I hope they don't expect an answer.

It's only 100% impossible if there is NOT a door or ceiling hatch that exists, but is hidden behind something....or if the hull is too large to fit through the 3'0" x 6'8" doors that they can see (at the top of the stairs, etc.).

I suppose that would be assuming that the person asking the question has investigated the basement and the boats well enough to know that a large door or hatch out of the basement does not exist, or that the boat cannot be broken down in such a way to fit through the conventional doors.

The only person that can get that boat out of that basement is Barbra Eden. (blink)

In one episode, the team was holding a kid who's dad had been (supposedly) kidnapped. The kid asked Gibbs how he was going to get the boat out. Gibbs replied something like "maybe knock out that wall, make a ramp, and drag it out", or something similar.

Gibbs is rarely sarcastic or cryptic when talking to kids.

in another episode, Gibbs visited colonel Mann and when they were just about to get it on, she said, before we (paraphrasing)go any further, tell me how you get the boat out of the basement.

I always thought it was more about the building and craftmanship than about actually using the boat when it's finished. Maybe he breaks it down and just starts all over again!

He did get at least one out of the basement. It was found floating into Navy waters off San Diego - with 2 dead men aboard.
He'd gifted it to his goddaughter (Amira) and sailed to to Baja for her.
Of course it was in the custody of the little girl's grandfatherMike Franks.
Episode: Outlaws and In-Laws.

Dr Jason Bull: Don't give up on people, they're all we've got.

My thought, for what it's worth, is that part of the basement could be under the garage, so all he has to do is remove the basement ceiling / garage floor and hoist the boat up.

reply

it's never spoken of but, there is an underground tunnel in his basement that is filled with water that Gibbs slips the boat in and sails to a river that sails to the ocean, and that is a fact.

How does Gibbs get his boats out of the basement? The answer is that he doesn’t have to. NCIS is a work of fiction — as are The Da Vinci Code and South Park, both of which are loosely (in South Park’s case, very loosely) based upon fact.

That same answer was provided by a contributor to a Gibbs-And-His-Boats website, who said that people who worry about such things should spend more time with their kids.

I think he has a removable wall that opens into the yard. I don' t remember seeing all around tge house. Maybe it's built on a hill.
