It gets better with age
I think I didn’t think too much of it at first when it came out, but revisiting this movie 16 years later it gives you a totally different perspective. Depp’s performance here is quite good actually. It’s eccentric, funny, creepy and sad all at the same time. I think he hit all the right notes with the character.
