I recently endured a sybaritic stay in hospital with a roommate who always had this and Family Guy on the TV. Thank God for painkillers. Are there really that many stupid people who comprise a demographic attractive to advertisers?

No show is for everyone, but I do find this show funny, even if I do hate Charlie Sheen. Hope you're feeling better.
I think it's very funny but totally implausible as most sitcoms are.
The fact that your idiot roommate spent a whole day watching RE-RUNS says more about his character then the clever writers of this show.
The only time I purge is on new season/series. Even then I have to break after 4hrs.
In roommate's defense, there's not much watchable on cable TV during the daytime, and the hospital probably had a limited lineup. It's not like a hotel where at least they probably have a few movie channels.
