Zooey Deschanel Totally Took Me Out of the Movie

It made the movie much harder to watch than it would have been without her. Speaking for myself

It's not that I think she's necessarily a bad actress. She has her unique charm, and she's not wooden or hammy or anything. She hasn't displayed that much range throughout her career, but there are many solid actors who don't necessarily have a broad range

It's just that she has become so synonymous with the "manic pixie dream girl" AKA quirky love interest stock character that I just cannot stomach seeing her. As soon as I saw that first scene where Arthur meets her at the party I knew EXACTLY what her whole character arc was going to be.

OF COURSE a Zooey Deschanel character would want to go on a spontaneous adventure to Madagascar and then jump at the chance to travel in space. That is such a Zooey Deschanel thing to do. So quirky and plucky that it makes me want to shoot myself in the face

I think she did a good job with her character. I think the problem IS the character. Almost completely unnecessary, IMHO.

That aside, I love the movie.
