HL2 Movie = Not going to happen

Let's face it, this can't be made into a movie.
First of all because, Gordon never speaks and you never see him (because it's a first-person shooter).
So what's the idea? A cameraman running around, playing the character of Gordon Freeman?

And if it's an actor playing Gordon, Is he going to have lines?
Because he can't be quiet the whole movie (like he is in the game).
Also, if he has lines it will compromise the story.

It would be nice to see a movie about Half-Life 2, but it's not gonna happen.

It may be possible to make a movie which is 'based' of the game.

It's impossible to make if you follow those ridiculous guidelines, making Freeman talk doesn't compromise anything. And of all the game adaptions I've never seen one that restricted the camera movement to the one in the game for the entirety of the film. It could be adapted into a film quite easily.

If anyone is up to finding the article, I remember an interview from about a year or two ago where Gabe Newell talks about how valve is not at all interested in making a HL based movie.

reply

Yeah that's because if they make a movie, it would probably suck.
If it is hated, like a few other game-based movies, it's bad news for Valve.
And they're not willing to take that chance.

I don't think that matters, Valve wouldn't be standing for the creation of a movie anyway, but maybe you referring to getting the rights...

I'm suppose to put my signature here...we'll see about that

reply

Let me clarify, they have no interest in pursuing a film project themselves and they will not sell the rights for a film to anyone.

reply

Yeah so all the people talking about movie casts and director choices, can stop now...

Why the hell does it bother you so much? I don't see what's wrong with people discussing who they would like to see appearing in or directing a hypothetical movie.

reply

It dosn't bother me that much really, I'm just saying that it is pointless.

Personally I would also like to see a HL2 movie, but it's not gonna happen.

Valve is doing the right thing - there are too many video game to movie adaptations - what happened to the good old days (1980s/1990s) when movies were made into video games (Ocean Software, anyone?)

reply

Watch a movie called "Children of Men." If ever a Half Life movie is made, it should follow those guidelines.

How would him talking compromise the story?

My idea: he's normal until the resonance cascade which makes him traumatized. he talks less and less as the movie goes on because of the horror at Black Mesa and uses his fear to kick ass. There:

*beep* YO COUCH NI GGA

We are all equal in the eyes of God...except for those goddamn ESKIMOS!!!

I could imagine a movie bridging the gap between Half Life and Half Life 2. Maybe focusing on the 7 hour war.

anything's possible... it just depends on how the transition from the video game to the big screen is made (and, of course, by who). my personal opinion is that a succesful (and faithful) half-life series-based movie can be done in the manner of the lotr trilogy (competent director + detailed plot). note that i said "successful" but not "original"... when it comes to the latter, i also think that the series could be comprised into one single film, but then it would have to miss some plot elements (i thought about an introductive sequence - like the first 10-20 minutes - and it goes like this: gordon arrives at the black mesa research facility just like in hl1, on his way to the test chamber he meets a few key characters like barney, eli vance, dr. kleiner - and of course, catches a glimpse of the g-man - and when the resonance cascade occurs, time suddenly stops for gordon, as he is "zapped" by a xenian crystal lightning, or maybe put into stasis by the g-man. after that, the hl2 plot line follows. gordon wakes up in a tram, reminiscent to the one in the beginning - like, from a nightmare - and while the world has radically changed since the arrival of the combine, he also suffers from a mild case of amnesia, that vanishes when he meets dr. vance and barney. the rest of the plot is loosely based on the rest of the hl2 campaign, including the three episodes. when i say loosely, i mean that the writer or director will have to adapt the screenplay so that it would fit an adequate running time - ie. removing some chapters, characters, creatures.)

wow... so much for an introductive sequence :D

Here's another thing you might want to take a look at.
It's from an interview with Gabe Newell, managing director, Valve.

Finally, Newell also warned fans not to expect a Half-Life movie anytime soon, as he had some unkind words to say about the script treatments Hollywood has offered: "They all sucked!"

i suppose they could give freeman lines in the movie. but zzenoxx is right about his no lines in the game. that is an important aspect of the game, or at least it is done intentionally. it's like never seeing master chief's face in halo, except done better.
