Didn't like this direction the franchise went in

The first Half-Life appeals to me so much because it was almost Doom-like in its simple premise, and I've loved that premise ever since. But why did everything move to this dumb City 17 ever since? Was that the original plan for the franchise, to take place there, but they couldn't do it yet as the tech wasn't quite there to render it, and Valve needed a solid HL1/Doom premise for its first major game to establish itself as a major game studio?

I don't like HL2 at all, I thought it was greatly overrated. And I would rather play as a lone (and I mean LONE) protagonist who is merely doing his duty, and not venerated as a Christ-like figure.

I can't argue with the gameplay in HL2, that element alone at least sells it. But I remember when I first saw HL1 loaded onto a PC at the electronics store in 1999 and pestered my parents to buy me a PC just to play that game. I loved the atmosphere, the underground setting, the adrenaline rush, the extraordinary AI for its time.

But I suppose after Opposing Force and Blue Shift, the creators felt they'd milked the Black Mesa base for all it was worth? I'd like to give HL2 another go at least. I only even played it on the PS3, but my console died before I was able to finish it. I'll download it from Steam sometime.

I actually like Half Life 2 to be honest, but I do very much prefer the first game. Would like a more streamlined sequel to Half Life 2 that is more like the first game. We wont get it but one can hope.
