Why does everyone hate this movie?

I'll admit that when I first saw it, I didn't like the way it adapted the Dark Phoenix saga.

But upon rewatching it, I'll admit that, on its own, its a good film, if still a step down from X2, and I can't understand why most people hate it and consider it one of the worst comic book movies of all time.

Can someone explain?

I am more of a fan of the original Good Phoenix Saga. But aside from that you got Juggernaut who isn't Proffessor Xavier's brother, Rogue gets less screentime, and of course instead of Cosmic Phoenix shown at the end of X2 we instead have the bullcrap of Jean always having had multiple personality disorder which is forced and comes out of nowhere.

Partly because it was a let-down after the excellent "X2", and partly because... it could have been SO good! But isn't.

It's one of those frustrating movies that... almost sort of works, or which could have worked with a few changes, but which just isn't good. And I suppose a movie like that holds your attention in the way that a terrible movie does not, if a movie is unrelievedly bad you start laughing or stop paying attention and think about something else, but a movie like this, one which COULD have worked, you keep watching and get angry and frustrated as promising scene after promising scene goes down the tubes.

The problem with the movie is that beyond being bad, it's bad in a way that sort of betrays all the flaws of the first two movies. Think the first two movies have too much Wolverine for the amount of characters they're trying to balance? Well, we'll have twice as many characters and twice as much Wolverine! Think the effects tend to be a little on the rushed and shoddy side of things? Well, here are some really horrible effects that we spent ZERO time on perfecting! Also remember the plots of the first two movies essentially being variations of the same storyline? Well, this time it's going to be the same story only with your favorite X-Men comic storyline grafted onto it awkwardly!

I didn't like it because they didn't seem to care one bit about the characters. Killing Professor X was a huge mistake, even with the lame other body set-up for his resurrection. Killing Cyclops was just petty revenge for James Marsden going with Bryan Singer to Superman Returns. So many characters were just butchered for no reason, many of them we barely even knew because Brett Ratner refuses to make movies that are longer than 90 minutes (he went slightly over here, but the combination of the two stories needed way more time to breathe).

The first movie was good, the second movie was real good, but this one came across as a so-so sellout when it came to dealing with what was different. Its "cure" reminded me of the equally revolting "cure" in the Star Trek - The Next Generation "Outcast" episode.

Some complain of the deaths of two prominent characters, but how often are characters resurrected in comics? Isn't one significant character resurrected in this very film? Others complain about the supposed short runtime and lack of depth but X3 has the exact same runtime as the first film (104 minutes) and there's plenty of depth to mine, take Rogue's dilemma over taking a cure in order to have human intimacy, Phoenix's incredible inner conflict symbolizing the universal clash of flesh and spirit (id and super-ego), Cyclop's grief and astonishing discovery, Pyro's moral degeneration, Mystique's plight after getting kicked out of the Brotherhood and Wolverine's struggle to do the right thing despite his deep love, to name just six.

On the downside, the big clash on Alcatraz Island feels routine and dull. They should’ve kept the focus on the Dark Phoenix, but the producers probably felt this would take away from the other characters, plus they wanted the clichéd big battle sequence. Nevertheless, there’s enough good here to appreciate.

I am so happy to see someone post this because I've NEVER understand the hate for this movie. When it came out, it seemed that all the critics wanted to pout about was that Bryan Singer didn't direct it. And while I'm not a huge fan of Brett Ratner, he did a fine job with this movie. Hell, the script he used was 2/3rds written before he even took charge of the project!

The other constant (and stupid) bitching used about this movie, is the tired "there's not enough character development" line. The two previous movies gave us ample character development. If they spent time on developing a background story on every mutant, these movies would be 4 hours long! What we needed in the third X-Men movie was some kick-ass battles, which we got! I loved how Magneto finally got unleashed in this movie and got to show what a powerful badass he can be and the whole Dark Phoenix storyline was fine. By the way, Ian McKellan is still the best Magneto, in my view.

People need to get a grip! Not every X-Men movie is going to be X-2, just like every Batman movie isn't going to be The Dark Night, or every Star Wars movie isn't going to be The Empire Strikes Back.

X-3: The Final Stand was a solid, enjoyable movie with great action and a decent story.

1. Cyclops getting killed off so Wolverine can once again take up all the screentime.
2. Mystique becoming a human and not shown the rest of the movie.
3. The Phoenix being Jean Grey gone nuts instead of a cosmic being like in the comics.
4. Juggernaut not being Xavier's stepbrother and just being some lackey of Magneto.
5. No Nightcrawler.
The more I have watched it the more I hate it. It's all mainly due to Brian Singer leaving to do that stupid Superman movie.

1. Cyclops was barely used in X2. This problem originated in X2.
2. Does Mystique need to be the star of every movie? She got plenty of time in all other movies.
3. Phoenix was introduced in X2 and was never shown as a cosmic character. Xmen were never in outer space. They really didn’t have a choice.
4. They adapted and readapted all the characters. Mystique was never a flunky of magneto either. In the much praised DOFP Kitty suddenly has time travel powers.
5. No night crawler but we had Beast. Also had the excellent kitty pride. If the criticism is too many mutants / this wouldn’t have helped.

The Worst X-Men Movie Death Made No Sense

Cyclops' death in X-Men: The Last Stand doesn't just lack emotional or logical sense. It also shows the flawed thinking behind the whole franchise.

It's not as good as the first two films but I never disliked it.
