I thought it was funny

Everybody keeps on talking about how depressing it is. I thought this movie was one of the funniest movies out there.

Did anybody else see the understated humour in this movie?

reply

For me it was both. Funny as hell and sad as it gets at the same time. Saw the film yesterday, blew me away to tears. One of the best films I've seen the last 10 years, at least.

reply

Definitely. I thought the comedy was very strong throughout--but it's a dark and claustrophobic comedy (attempting to point out the absurdity of every human life) that I suppose a lot of people wouldn't recognize as funny. If you have an eye for it though, it is extremely comedic (even without extreme moments like the burning house).

I'm with you guys. This movie had me laughing out loud, and I didn't get depressed one bit, even at the end which I thought was the funniest punchline: "Die!" (cut to black)

To me, this film is a classic dark comedy, touching on disturbing subjects but always with a great deadpan, tongue-in-cheek delivery. It reminds me of the riotously funny "Catch-22" (which a lot of people also find depressing)

It starts off really funny for me and the humor starts getting sucked out towards the end and it turns into some real sadness.

"they said it was the saddest longest speech anyone has ever said on their deathbed"

"there was so little left of him they had to fill it with cottonballs to keep the body from rolling around"

reply

I agree. The movie started funnily with a caustic overtone where the description of Fall was harrowing. The funny parts were the eccentricities of the characters of Hazel and Claire. But in the second half the humor started getting sucked into the melancholy of the situations whereby Caden stretched his play to 17 years and even longer. The whole 'character double' thing was weird, confusing and stupid. And then the sadness of him wandering aimlessly and blah blah blah........It was too messed up to give any real moral at the end of the story. So its a failed attempt to create an allegory of life

I guess there is understated humour in this movie, but it's actually not mine. Okay movie though.

Through the first act I was literally roaring with laughter. It's all so darkly absurd and neurotic. But the second act went on too long and the third act was too ponderous. 7/10

It was funny throughout, and sad throughout. I thought Olive's death scene was incredibly sad and laugh out loud funny at the same time. This isn't a failed attempt, in my view...it's a movie about a man who fails, because he is always five seconds behind now.

Devastating, and hilarious, simultaneously.

My wife was horrified; either by the film or me laughing at the whole thing. Seems like a dark comedy to me, and a hilarious one at that.

It's of course sad and funny...I wouldn't call it depressing

Even the most primitive society has an innate respect for the insane.

reply

Well this was kind of heavy drama/comedy film.

Yeah there are A LOT of funny bits but that doesn't mean that the film itself can't be depressing.

reply

I've seen it a few times and find it a bit more funny each time. My latest watch was today and I was laughing more.

Yeah I found it quite pathetic and terribly funny at the same time! The part where Olive dies is just over the top ridiculous. I think I get it why people find it depressing - it's life and it's futile, but hey...
