Toby is neither gay nor bi

It's called pansexuality.

Pansexuality or anthrosexuality (anthro- literally meaning human, human sexual) (sometimes referred to as omnisexuality) is a sexual orientation characterized by the potential for aesthetic attraction, romantic love, and/or sexual desire for people, regardless of their gender identity or biological sex. Thus, pansexuality includes potential attraction to people (such as transgender individuals) who do not fit into the gender binary of male/female. Some pansexuals suggest that they are gender-blind; that gender and sex are insignificant or irrelevant in determining whether they will be sexually attracted to others.

Differentiating pansexuality from bisexuality seems like splitting hairs to me...

The difference can be that being Bisexual means you are attracted to boys AND girls.

Being Pansexual means your open to new things, and you don't look at gender. But that could also mean your not attracted to girls/guys. Your just open to new things.

I love pansexuality...I wish we could all be that free!

Unfortunately I'm not :'(.

Great post. Also victims of childhood abuse tend to only relate to other people sexually, but are extremely cut off from their own sexuality and derive little pleasure from sex.

No Louis, you're mistaken. It's not me.

I don't quite follow what you are saying here. I DO understand it partially, but, what has it to do with Toby's character?

The description do not fit Toby's character at all- He was simply just in love, and when you fall in love with an individual you tend to ignore things in that person that you otherwise may potentially have found less appealing or even disturbing.
So, it's really not that odd in this case, as he simply had already fallen in love with Bree's personality.

What I meant was that as a victim of childhood sexual abuse he had learned that being a sexual object was all he was "good for". I don't know if he was in love with Bree but he did have feelings for her and the only way he knew how to convey that is to offer himself sexually, the sexual abuse had "taught" him that this was the only thing he had of worth, so that is really the only why he knows how to relate to people.

I think a lot of people missed that point in the movie, that Toby was a sexually abused victim (his stepfather molested him as a child) therefore he would engage in male sex or porn as we saw in the movie, only when he needed money. Did he truly enjoy these encounters, we really don't know as viewers. I agree with hitchcock blond, Toby being an abused victim had a very limited scope on showing his affection, that being mostly through sex when he did strongly feel for someone as he did with Bree in the grandparents home.
