kiss question (SPOILER!!!)

Okay, at the end when Toby was in Bree's room and admitted he was basically in love w/ her, then kissed her, well, I've watched this closely several times and it SEEMS as if Bree doesn't pull away from that kiss IMMEDIATELY. She stayed in that kiss for a good few seconds and then pulled away. Of course, we know she rebuked him seriously after that. But, I wondered if anyone else noticed that?

I'd love to hear opinions on that if other's noticed.

Anyone???

There was no reason for Bree to let the kiss linger for a bit..I don't think she had even the slightest bit of attraction towards her son...either she let it linger on a platonic level, or it was just a poor acting choice.

reply

aah, poor acting choice; that is what I was wondering. Good call!

it was my opinion bree enjoyed it...and yes its incest. she didnt for one sec stop and say NO YOU'RE MY SON THIS IS WRONG!

She instead told him she was originally a he ...Now maybe she didnt want to hurt his feelings so she chose to go about it the way she did...but saying no because i am your dad leaves me to think "hey you wouldnt want this if u knew i had a penis" and only cos she didnt pull away from him and seem to enjoy the kiss.

Perhaps incest is the next taboo that will be broken.

A FANTASTIC vid about an actor playing a TRANSVESTITE!:

Okay, so you guys agree, she lingered a bit w/ the kiss, yes?

reply

I think she was caught up in the moment, feeling like a woman first, then realized what they were doing was wrong.

reply

maybe felicity hauffman liked it. lol i know i would

I think she kissed him for one moment having felt close to the son she'd never known she'd had until his phonecall. I don't think she had quite expected him to try to take it as far as he had.

I honestly don't even know if up until this point, Bree had ever kissed a man.

reply

Nah, for about 3 seconds there, it was no Bree. Pure Felicity Huffman cougar moment.

reply

Yea I don't think she meant to.

Hi, I have a copy of the shooting script for this film (found it on Amazon). Here is what is written, by writer/director Duncan Tucker, regarding the kiss:

"Suddenly Toby presses his lips to Bree's in a kiss. Bree is so hungry for physical affection that for the briefest second she allows it to happen. Then she recoils."

His notes later on in the book regarding the same scene:

"Before shooting this scene I was very concerned about performance, because there's so much going on here, and it's so delicately balanced between sweetness, sadness, shame, embarrassment, sexiness, and humor. But Felicity and Kevin nailed it. Bree's so starved for affection she allows him to kiss her for nearly a second before breaking away. When the Weinstein Company did screenings in Manhattan and in the suburbs of New Jersey, several Manhattan audience members said 'This scene made me uncomfortable. I loved it.' Interestingly, several suburban audience members said, 'This scene made me uncomfortable. I didn't like it.'"

I thought it was more delaying on her part, all throughout the film she'd been afraid to tell Toby who she really was and Toby's vulnerability was too much to take at that moment, I think the lingering was a mental pause- a mixture of her thinking what to do next, being totally shocked, not wanting Toby to feel more rejection and feeling close to her son and then it wildly spinning back to reality within that second where she had to break away and face the situation. Her staying any longer than that second was starting to stray her into enjoying the intimateness of the kiss and as soon as that happened she stopped it because she has absolutely no sexual feelings towards Toby.
