...the best thing to do would be to hold up where other people aren't. Massive crowds attract the bloody things...so best be where many people are not...yes?

They were on an island that was clearly overrun. Getting to the mainland was the only chance they had....yes?

No. They were in New York State, on the west side of the Hudson River, and wanted to go to Boston, which would require crossing to the other side of the Hudson and traveling further east.

Exactly! Nowhere was safe, so best not to be where the crowds of people are desperately trying to escape...that would be my tactic anyway LOL!
