Robbie at the end

We don't know how he survived of course, but what did he say to his mother/grandparents when he arrived in Boston?

"Nah I ditched stupid dad and my helpless little sister 'cause I'm a cool tough guy! Awesome, right? I even threw a rock at one of the mean giant robots and if it was a mile closer I could'a hit it on the foot or something! Badass!
So what did you guys even do? Hiding here in this house like pussies! Mom, what are you doing with that frying pan.....?"

It’s true. Kid had some explaining to do.

What I found weird is that when he re-emerges at the end we never see his face properly, it even looks like a different actor from the side. And his whole ‘hi dad’ doesn’t sound like the character. Was Justin Chatwin suddenly unavailable..?

reply

Yep, just rewatched the end on Netflix, that was weird wasn't it? Maybe the actor is as stupid as the character and got himself hurt.

It’s like they maybe did a reshoot and didn’t want to pay for the actor to come back. If that was the case, what was the original ending..?

reply

Robbie not being there in the original ending, would be my guess.

Something that wouldn't have bothered too many people seeing as he was an exasperating self destructive idiot.

Ok I'm being mean, but the kids in this movie are famously irritating - him in particular.

reply

Rachel isn’t especially annoying, only when she screams but then it’s supposed to be irritating because that’s the effect it has on Ray. Plus, by the end she has run out of screams because she’s so disturbed by the whole ordeal, which is quite a dark ending for her.

I’d be very interested to discover that Robbie was supposed to have died, I mean that would be very bleak, and actually a deviation from the book which I believe has the main character’s wife ‘die’ only to miraculously appear at the end.

But I’m telling you something is very ‘off’ about Robbie at the end and the fact we don’t see his face, nor Rachel’s reaction to seeing him.

Yes, his character is irritating. Again, he’s sorta supposed to be because Ray is such a deadbeat dad plus he’s at that rebellious age. If the story is about a dysfunctional family bonding under extreme circumstances then they sorta have to be dicks to each other initially so that they can go on that ‘journey’.

Ha, I actually looked back a bit further to compare he and Tom's heights...the comparison at the end matches the rest of the movie so they got that right.

And good point about Rachel's reaction to him being there at the end too....there isn't one.

I never considered this being an altered ending before today. I like this movie overall, and you've added an interesting aspect.

reply

I still hate Robbie tho. Whiny selfish little baby booboo.
