What went wrong was Raimi wanted sandman in the film even though sandman is a shit villain, low level thug. So he shoehorned him in by having him be the killer of uncle ben, retarded. Then he made the symbiote stuff cheesy and turned the green goblin into a snowboarder, venom looked silly in the end as well. The CG was terrible in the film and the crane attack left one wondering.
They had a good setup for the third film, could have even left venom for the 4th and just handled dark Spiderman but Raimi wanted sandman as the big bad guy with a sympathetic backstory.
Raimi's ego conflicted with Arad's business acumen. Raimi won, but Arad ultimately was right. Venom was the money maker, not Sandman.
