Meredith seems so soulless.

I know life hit her HARD but she has started to act so very nonchalant and cold. Has anyone else have an issue with that?

I thought know it's her defense mechanism. Derek helped with that, but now she's reverted back. She does this to protect herself unknowingly so she won't get hurt again

She isn't soulless and she still does show emotions when the time is right. Like with Alex, she is very loving and protective of him. But like SarahKSeraSera says, it's her defense mechanism. It's probably something she employed since having to call for help after her mother's suicide attempt and seeing her mother cutting her wrists and covered in blood at the age of seven. She has seen so much trauma since childhood and it's her defense to shut down to people and appear a bit hard. Hopefully they'll give us some more scenes of her and her kids this seasons because I think it shows a good balance between the hard Meredith Grey and the Meredith who can relax and let her guard down at home with her children.

She has a lot of hurt. Shondi put her through hell. She has a lot of soul and love but she has been hurt so much that she has all kinds of defenses. I hate it when people attack her like that. Yes, she does have moments when she's a total bitch but soulless? no!!!!

Sorry, but that is a half assed excuse. Lots of people go through hell and get hurt countless amount of times but they grow up and find ways to overcome it. Yeah, she is pretty dismissive to everyone except for those people she considers her "person"

I agree. She just has to be nasty to everyone, but a select few. Wait and see, if Alex and Jo get back together, Meredith will treat her like crap and judge her, when she has no idea what it takes for someone to get away from a situation like the one Jo was in. And yes, maybe Jo should have told Alex the truth sooner, but she was scared and Meredith being Meredith, doesn't forgive other people for their flaws.

She loves Alex and is still trying to coddle Maggie. I wouldn't say she was soulless.

Luckily some people are finally starting to see her for the vapid and selfish bitch she is while others continue to make excuses for her and do the coddling crap.

I just think she's passed the age where you wear your heart on your sleeve all the time, like she did when she was an intern and resident.

She is very cold and pretty self-involved. Now April - there is a warm character!

What? Meredith has more soul & emotions than any other character on the show. She's also quite far from being vapid & selfish. And some people obviously do no know the actual meaning of the word "bitch".
