Surprisingly great!

When I began watching it today, I already had high expectations because of positive buzz it has generated, but surprisingly, this baby surpassed even those! This is one of the best western I have seen (I don't care if its set in Australia, this is a western flick to me).
Highly recommended!! Word of warning - If you have a weak stomach for violence/brutality, please avoid!!

OP here. I am surprised that this gem is NOT well liked by general viewers (and even critics). Its amazing how tastes differ!
Though I haven't seen 'Road' yet, I get the feeling that I am going to love that one too. Again, having read too many negative reactions about 'Road', it seems safe to say that John Hillcoat directed movies only appeal to few select viewers. Its sad really!

Warning: The Proposition is one of my favorite film and I hated the Road. I refuse to even believe Hillcoat directed it - yes, THAT BAD.

reply

the road is freakin awesome, as is the book by McCarthy. I'd say the proposition is probably the better of the two though.

reply

Totally agree. The Proposition = Great. The Road = Awful

We're not soldiers and he's not the enemy. He's a pizza man.

Why surprising? Did you imagine the only movies set in frontier locations are American? Is that why you insist it is a 'Western?

The Road was quite terrible and this film was alright, but far from great. The amount of praise it gets is ridiculous. The cinematography was great and a few of the characters were near great, but that's about it. The music was near horrendous in my view and the writing took short cuts at almost every turn. It just wasn't well thought out at all and it leaves too much of the story entirely vague. The film in fact was so laughable in parts. For instance when Captain Stanley leaves his house, telling his wife he'll "be back tomorrow and don't let anybody in.". Scared for his wife's safety of course, he then leaves, yet he leaves the door WIDE OPEN. She isn't even near the door. Is this a man who is on the alarm and concerned about his wife's safety? The film was beyond dumb regarding many very simple aspects like this. It entirely lacked common sense, yet many people lap this very mediocre but great looking film up. Go figure.

My body's a cage, it's been used and abused...and I...LIKE IT!! [Evil2]
