Danny Boy Anachronism

John Hurt sings a snatch of "Danny Boy" - the lyrics were written in 1910 for another song, and adapted to the Londonderry Air in 1913.

interesting. I wondered that about "Danny Boy". Didn't realize that stuff about the flags though. Thanks for the info.

Same problem as in Once Upon a Time in the West, aye?

My mistake...four coffins.

It's like that dumb A Knight's Tale with Heath Ledger. David Bowie didn't write Golden Years until the 19th century but they used it in the movie. Cha!

.

Geez I knew Bowie's getting on a bit but I never knew the geezer was THAT old!

Yes... I can picture it now, bunch of ladies in Victorian-era dresses gavotting to 1970s soul

Haha, it's a typical mistake for some people in some countries, in sweden (where I live) we call the 1900-2000 the "19th century", while in America and some other countries, it's called the 20th century.

reply

Sorry, I don't mean to speak about your country, when you obviously know better but I doubt very much you would use 19th Century to claim 19-2000. Think about it.

The first century has to be from 0AD to 99AD, there for, 1900-1999 HAS to be the 20th century.

The thing is, here in sweden we hardly ever use the term "19th century" etc. we almost always say "the nineteenhundreds" etc. (of course, we say it in swedish, but you probably get my point), and that would be 1900-1999. That's why it can be a bit confusing to some. :)

(My previous explanation wasn't very correct, I noticed that now, I must have been tired or something).

Anyway, we almost always say "1900-talet", which could better be translated as "the nineteenhundreds".

We do that here in Denmark as well, but "det 19. århundrede" is still the 1800's.

reply

Well, we swedes are a little strange. ;)

That scene jarred with me as well.

Actually, the earliest recorded date of the tune which became Londonderry Air is 1855.

There is a long history of the song "Danny Boy". Even though the song we now know of as "Danny Boy" was officially written and recorded and made popular in the early 20th century, the origins date back to mid-19th century.
