Terence Malick's Days of Heaven?
They both have pretty similar intros, what with the old photographs of the era - is this intentional? Have the filmmakers admitted their nod to Malick's film?
WHAT'S IN THE BOX??????

John Hillcoat is evidently a huge Malick fan. His recent Levi's commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=635XItRDU7gsits) sits on the boundary between 'homage to' and 'rip-off of' The New World.
The opening half of this film also features some editing very reminiscent of The Thin Red Line.
Wow great advert
WHAT'S IN THE BOX??????
I can definitely see that, but I'd say it owes a lot to Peckinpah's CROSS OF IRON too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8U9Sh91htIA
